Reading Culture Construction Project for Rural Schools of West Hunan Province, implemented by Reading Dreams Charity Foundation (Reading Dreams), is a project for public benefit that aims to promote education quality in rural schools through setup of the school reading room and creating good reading atmosphere.
The project was launched in 2008 by Mr. Liang Weiming, a Hong Kong-based school principal with 20-year’s experience in education. By using the newly-built school reading room as a platform, the project trains officials from local education bureaus, local school principals, school librarians, teachers and parents to transform their school education module, enhance teachers’ teaching concepts and techniques, and promote reading in an effort to develop students’ abilities to understand, communicate, tolerate and create, and thus enhance their all-round quality. As of December 2014, Reading Dreams have set up 210 reading rooms in schools located in Hunan, Fujian and Ningxia with more than 120,000 students benefited from this effort. The achievement made by Reading Dreams has been recognized by Hunan United Front Work Department (a department that is set up by Chinese Communist Party to unite people from all walks of life and overseas Chinese), which includes this project in their “Tongxin ” (literally with one heart) project.
In 2015, Macao Tong Chai Charity Association (Tong Chai) supports Reading Dreams to set up six school libraries in six schools in three counties, western Hunan. Tong Chai also covers expenditures on the teachers and parents’ training and other administrative cost.
