Longtan Migrant Workers’ Children Community Library Project(Phase II), implemented by Stars Youth Development Center, is a reading promotion project that targets migrant workers and their children. The project provides quality books, courses that are appropriate for children, parents and families, and reading space for migrant families, and tries to enable migrant families to enjoy quality reading life and reduce their reading deficiency due to education resource imbalance.
Since 2013, Macao Tong Chai Charity Association has supported Stars Youth Development Center to set up a community library in Longtan village (also called Xingren Library) and operate the library for one year. The inspection conducted in early 2015 reveals that, after one year’s operation, Xingren Library run well along with better outcome acquired. The library atmosphere was good, and most of children have got into good reading habits and became more active and outspoken. Their parents turned their initial “ no opposition and no support” attitude around to encouragement and engagement in reading. The library has had a positive influence on other public libraries and public welfare organizations in Haizhu District and won over their support. In the coming two years, Xingren Library will further improve its service module, and upgrade its management system to increase its borrowing rate, targeted and systemic activities. Xingren Library will also try to use results of assessment by the invited university professional team to finally enhance service quality and readers’ experiences, thus forming a community library module that can be referred to in the future.
In 2015, Macao Tong Chai Charity Association provides funding for the library’s facilities and maintenance, parent-child reading promotion activities and its operation.
