The 2016 “Friendly Family”? Rural Kindergartens Project(Phase II), implemented by the Chen Xi Center for Child Development in Tiandong County, Guangxi(Chen Xi Center) in Yuanse village and Naban village, Tiandong County, aims to address the issue of access to local kindergartens for children in these two villages by helping local villagers open kindergartens and training teachers and parents, and then use local kindergartens as activity centers for the left-behind children after school dismisses, so that the after-school life quality of left-behind children can be enhanced..
Both Yuanse village and Naban village, Tiandong County are located in the remote area with poor transportation and communication. More than 95% local children are left behind in their homes and most of them are taken care of by their grandparents, because? each year, their parents go to cities to work due to poverty. Their grandparents, occupied by their fieldwork and confined by their limited energy, can’t provide enough company for their grandchildren. Therefore, the common wish of villagers and the village commissions is let children ages 3-6 be enrolled in kindergartens. With that, Chen Xi Center plans on providing more quality preschool education and growing environment for local children by helping local villagers collect resources to open kindergartens in Yuanse village and Naban village, while offering teacher and parent training at the same time. In addition, Chen Xi Center also uses the kindergartens as activity centers for the left-behind children after the school dismisses, where books and sports equipment will be provided for volunteers to form interest groups for the students in primary and middle schools to live a rich after-class lives.
The Macao Tongchai Charity Association provides funding for the kindergartens’ hardware supplement, materials for the activity centers for the left-behind children, teacher training, parent workshops and some administrative expenses.
